We're in the midst of a shifting demographic that has ignited a culture war. As in any war, truth is the first victim. It doesn’t matter if the weapons are bombs or words, the victims are lives or principles, the outcome be killed or cancelled.
As a journalist, I’ve come to realize that when a concept becomes “baked” into the public’s psyche it most often is false or at least flawed. This is where the idea for The Thin White Line originated, first as an article, then an essay, and finally as a novel. Because issues of race and culture are complex and demand subtlety and nuance, they're better dealt with as literary fiction where nothing is black and white.
I situated my protagonist in circumstances where he’d be exposed to the overt and the systemic, the well-intentioned and the misdirected. The research and the writing at times were disturbing, enlightening, frightening and frustrating. The story ends in neither triumphant nor defeat. It will enrage some readers while validating others.
